Google has revealed ample hardware choices for its users in its Google I/O conference this year. With Google Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet and the much-awaited Pixel 7a, the brand has also unveiled the Wear OS.
The smartwatch operating system will be compatible for Pixel Watch 2 and the Galaxy Watch6 series. Google has also given the latest updates on Android 14.

The announcement for Wear OS 4 comes as a surprise as Wear OS 3 didn’t take off until the end of 2022 and it has been over three years since Google took out any upgrade for the same. However, the brand has been working on making the operating system more seamless with a partnership with Samsung. And with the Pixel Watch out, the update for Wear OS 4 is to release later this year.
Wear OS 4: New featuresThe smartwatch operating system is expected to showcase an improved battery life and data backup upgrades. The update has come along after nearly three years and Google has still not revealed the release date of the Wear OS 4.
As mentioned previously, Google will provide the Wear OS 4 system updates to Pixel and Galaxy models. In addition, the operating system to function first on the Pixel watches and then speculated to move on to the Galaxy Watch series. There has been no information from Google regarding the hardware details of the Wear OS 4 for smartwatches however, the operating system is suggested to be compatible with the latest smartwatch chipsets. Compared to that of Wear OS 3, Wear OS 4 offers a better battery life which was a drawback for the predecessors.
Taking inspiration from the Apple watch series, Google has taken up the data backup feature. A pivotal upgrade in the operating system is the novel watch face format, XML. Samsung and Google have partnered up for this upgrade wherein the users can work and create the watch faces easily.

The Google Wear OS 4 has also altered the Home app to make the functionality of control for playback and media which will be seamless and comprehensive for the compatible smartwatches. Moreover, the upgrade will see an extension of Google Apps on the smartwatch such as Gmail and Calendar. Users can respond to emails from their watch itself and they can also update tasks, RSVP events, check their schedule and others.
